Play, Learn and Connect at St John’s Playgroup

Play, Learn and Connect at St John’s Narraweena Playgroup

St John’s Playgroup is an opportunity for 3-5 year olds to play, learn and connect with other local children.

Two playgroup sessions were held in May.  The first session was themed around The Very Hungry Caterpillar, the popular book by Eric Carle. The second focused on a Space theme, linking into the National Simultaneous Storytime event in May, where the book “Give me some space” by Philip Bunting was read by an Astronaut at the International Space Station.

The Playgroup sessions offer a variety of activities based on fine motor skills and school readiness literacy and numeracy development. Some of the activities included making hungry caterpillar necklaces or playdoh caterpillars, bug hunting, finger painting, making a rocket using letters of the child’s name, mapping constellations, an outdoor space obstacle course and a space-treasure hunt.

Kylie Sheehan, St John’s Librarian and Literacy Co-ordinator said, “Playgroup is a great opportunity for children starting school to become familiar with the school, as well as to meet other children who will start school at the same time. The storytime and activities have been a huge hit with the children and gives them a taste of what to expect next year.”

Parents and Carers are an important part of Playgroup and are asked to remain on site with their children where they will discover play-based activities that can be done at home. There is no cost to attend and everyone is welcome.
